I know that motor oil and transmission oil use very different "weight" numbers to describe the same values in centistokes. (Like seriosuly, in Ottawa, our national capital, you cant find a shop MTB or moto that doesnt have suspension fluid on hand?). Enduro seals even used recommend motor oil for some of their applications (although I cont find the reference document) there is abundance of discussion on this topic on plenty of forums dating back quite some time. Older MTB suspension, and plenty of moto applications actually refer to motor oil use in suspension for lubrication. While I don't disagree that you should probably just use the oil that was specificity formulated for the application.Motor oil is generally fine in any suspension application where the oil is used for lubrication, Its generally not effective when the oil is required for damping. It doesn't warrant a recommendation of doing so. It's questionable, even as an emergency measure. A litre is enough for years of fork overhauls.īut when you can't get your hands on any when you need it, the option I used works.Īre you certain, for example, the formulation of your motor oil has the right balance of ingredients that swell or shrink nitrile rubber fork seals? If you're willing to spend presumably thousands of dollars on a bike, it's worth spending an extra ten bucks for the proper suspension fluid.
